Prospect Watch: This was your typical wild PCL affair in El Paso. The Chihuahuas jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, only to see Sacramento tie things up in the fifth inning. El Paso retook the lead for good in the seventh on an RBI double by Yonathan Perlaza. … The game-winning hit off the bat of Perlaza capped off a four-hit affair for the switch-hitter. Perlaza had an infield single and three doubles to raise his league-leading batting average to .393. He also leads the circuit with 13 two-baggers and his 1.090 OPS ranks third in the league, trailing teammate Luis Campusano and former first-rounder Jordan Lawlar. Perlaza does not occupy a 40-man roster spot, but the more he hits, the more consideration he could get as a bench option for the Padres. That may have become a more pressing issue when Mason McCoy injured his left pinky finger diving back to the bag on the final play of the big league game. … Left fielder Tim Locastro cranked a grand slam to left field – his second homer in three days. The 32-year-old is back for his second season in the organization. After appearing in the majors in seven consecutive seasons, he missed most of 2024 when he had to undergo shoulder surgery. right-hander has elite speed but hasn’t hit much in the majors. Through five games this season, he has a .993 OPS. … Eguy Rosario had just his second multi-hit game of the year with a pair of singles and an RBI. The talented infielder surprisingly cleared waivers at the end of spring training after the Padres designated him for assignment. Thus far, the 25-year-old is off to a miserable start, hitting just .180/.241/.180 in 14 games and has yet to record an extra-base hit. … Lefty Austin Krob made the start for El Paso and struggled to find the zone. He lasted 3.2 innings and allowed three runs as he walked five and allowed three hits. Krob has done a good job of limiting contact in five starts. Opposing batters are hitting just .232 against him, and he has a groundball rate north of 50%. Walks, however, have plagued Krob. He’s issued 16 free passes in 18 innings, leading to a 5.50 ERA. Krob has typically walked about three batters per nine innings, so assuming he can get back to commanding the zone better, he has a chance to be successful, even in the hitter-friendly environment of the PCL. … Righty Sean Reynolds pitched another scoreless inning, striking out a batter. Reynolds has pitched two scoreless innings in his rehab assignment as he returns from a foot injury he suffered early in spring training.
Missions Rained Out
The Missions’ game in Amarillo was rained out. The clubs will play a doubleheader at Hodgetown Saturday.
Lansing Lugnuts 3, TinCaps 1
Key Statistics: SS Leo De Vries, 1-for-4; 1B Brendan Durfee, 1-for-4; RF Nerwilian Cedeño, 1-for-4, R; RHP Enmanuel Pinales, 5 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 4 K; RHP Tyler Morgan, 2 IP, BB, 4 K; RHP Eiker Huizi (L, 1-1) IP, 3 H, 2 ER

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps took apart Lansing Lugnuts lefty Gage Jump on opening night three weeks ago, scoring five runs in two innings off the southpaw. On Friday, Gage came in after an opener and completely dominated Fort Wayne. Jump tossed 6.2 innings, punching out 13 TinCaps without allowing a walk. His dominant outing kept Fort Wayne in check and sent them to their third straight in Michigan. Jump, 22, was drafted by the Padres in the 18th round back in 2021, but did not sign. … Shortstop Leo De Vries singled once in the first of his four at-bats and swiped second base, but had a quiet night after that. Since going 5-for-5 in the series opener, De Vries is 2-for-11 in the three games since. Thanks partly to Tuesday’s breakout, the 18-year-old shortstop ranks sixth in the league with a .565 slugging percentage. … Righty Enmanuel Pinales didn’t dominate Friday, but he pitched well once again even though he did not factor in the decision. The 24-year-old pitched five innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out four. Pinales has thrown five innings in three straight starts. In those 15 innings, he’s allowed just three runs on 10 hits with 19 strikeouts. Last season, Pinales had a strikeout rate of 22% for Fort Wayne. This season, showing an extra tick of velocity this season, the righty has pushed that up to 31.5% while sitting 92-94 mph and topping out at 97. … For the second time in the series, 24-year-old Tyler Morgan tossed a pair of scoreless innings to keep the game close. Morgan has thrown the ball well as a multi-inning reliever for the TinCaps, allowing one run or less in six of his seven outings. Midwest League hitters are batting just .182 against the former Abilene Christian hurler, who sports a fantastic 0.98 WHIP.
Storm 7, Visalia Rawhide 2
Key Statistics: DH Kavares Tears, 2-for-4, BB; 1B Kaden Hollow, 2-for-4, 2 R, HR (1), BB, RBI; 3B Zach Evans, 2-for-5, 2 R; RF Ryan Wilson, 2-for-4, 2B, 3Bl LF Alex McCoy, 2-for-4, R, HR (2), 2 RBI; RHP Miguel Mendez, 4 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K; RHP Tucker Musgrove (W, 1-0) 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 BB; RHP Kleiber Olmedo, 2 IP, H, BB, K

Prospect Watch: The Storm ended a four-game losing streak, defeating the Rawhide at home. … First baseman Kaden Hollow had a multi-hit game, including his first homer of the season. The versatile Hollow has been a solid contributor offensively this season, putting together a .304/.431/.411 line. … Kavares Tears started as designated hitter and had two singles and drew a walk. Coming out of college last season, Tears was touted as having excellent power potential with some swing-and-miss tendencies. Thus far in his pro career, that analysis has played out. The former Tennessee outfielder has hit the ball with authority while punching out 13 times in 35 plate appearances. Despite the strikeouts, Tears is off to a .303/.343/.424 start. … Big outfielder Alex McCoy had two hits, including a laser shot of a home run that clipped the scoreboard in left. Much like Tears, McCoy has inflicted pain on the baseball when he makes contact. However, in a small sample, the former Hofstra outfielder has struck out 16 times in 38 plate appearances. At 23, he’s a bit old for the Cal League, but it’s easy to see why the Padres signed him as an undrafted free agent last season. His immense power potential will be fun to chronicle in Lake Elsinore this season. … Hard-throwing righty Miguel Mendez looked much sharper in his second outing this year, tossing four solid innings as he ran his fastball up to 98. He allowed two runs on two hits, walking two and striking out five. The 22-year-old had a solid season pitching for the Storm last season, pitching to a 3.86 ERA in 22 games (20 starts). Once Mendez gets stretched out, he could be a candidate to advance to Fort Wayne. … Righty Tucker Musgrove made his professional debut and earned the victory. Musgrove walked three batters in 1.1 innings but navigated his control issues to keep Visalia off the scoreboard. Musgrove, 23, was the the first NAIA player drafted when the Padres selected him in the seventh-round pick out of the University of Mobile in 2023. The righty was drafted as a two-way player, but after needing Tommy John surgery right after he signed and missing a full year of development, he will work only as a pitcher at this point.
While the big league club suffered another frustrating loss, Tirso Ornelas finally reached Petco Park. The Tijuana native, who signed with the Padres in 2016, collected his first big league hit in front of dozens of friends and family. We’ll have more on the 25-year-old’s long journey through the system. We also had a chance to catch up with newly-promoted Ryan Bergert in the big league clubhouse.
